About Machinist Workers

Machinists are highly skilled trades professionals who manufacture, modify, and repair precision metal components used in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, energy, and industrial production. Their work requires exceptional accuracy, technical knowledge, and a strong understanding of materials, measurements, and machining processes. Machinists interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to determine machining procedures, tooling requirements, and production sequences. They operate a variety of machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, grinders, and computer numerical control (CNC) equipment, to produce parts that meet exact tolerances and quality standards.

In addition to machining operations, Machinists are responsible for setting up machines, selecting appropriate cutting tools, and performing precision measurements using gauges, micrometres, and other measuring instruments. They must understand cutting speeds, feeds, material properties, and tool wear to ensure efficient and safe machining operations. Red Seal–certified Machinists demonstrate nationally recognized competence in machining theory, precision manufacturing, and trade practices, allowing them to work across Canada without additional provincial certification. This certification reflects a high level of technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and readiness to meet national occupational standards in the machining trade.

Key tasks performed by Machinist workers include

  • Interpreting engineering drawings and specifications to plan machining processes and tolerances.
  • Setting up and operating machine tools, including manual and CNC machines, to produce precision components.
  • Selecting tools, materials, and cutting parameters to achieve accurate and efficient machining results.
  • Measuring, inspecting, and verifying components to ensure they meet required specifications and quality standards.
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting machining equipment to support safe and continuous production.
